There are several things to consider when selecting security guards to work for your business.  When you are going to make use of security services you have to consider following things:

  • Who is your Client?

  • Professionalism
  • Training
  • Communication

When you are going to use the security services for the pubs, bars and the night clubs, then you might consider size. These days security guards are required in all business areas. Hotels, Hospitals etc have security guards. Lots of high-class new business areas and of course many major office blocks in any major UK city will have at least one security guard. But none of these areas required a security guard who has major muscle to carry out their jobs effectively. This lead to the next point, means the skills of your security guard. There are two types of skills:

  • Physical skills (SIA Physical intervention training, first aid training)
  • Mental skills and good communication
  • Good presentation

Your security guard may need to have physical skills such as, being capable to run and catch criminals, be physically fit to control a crowd. More important than physical skills is mental skills and competency. Your security guard should be able to manage aggressive situations through conflict management skills. All security personal are necessary to have a SIA license. Thus a security guard needs to be able to communicate effectively with a number of people means, the client, public and you.

Security Training has evolved:

The competencies were updated for all security officers in the UK – physical skills training plays a major part as we are now implementing physical intervention training for Door Supervisors – which is popular with Security Guards too. It is impossible to imagine even a store detective carry out their security related role without the ability to arrest, using safe physical skills. AAB now offers regular training to assist candidates in obtaining physical intervention skills.
